Chilean profits from opponent's misfortune

Fernando Gonzalez won the Vina Del Mar Open after Juan Monaco was hurt in the doubles final. Third-seeded Argentine Monaco was forced to withdraw from the singles final after damaging his left ankle and is now expected to miss his country's Davis Cup tie against Great Britain. Monaco had earlier beaten Santiago Ventura 6-2 6-4 to reach the final against top seed Gonzalez, who defeated Pablo Cuevas in three sets. Umpire Carlos Bernardes said Monaco has sustained a 'serious ankle injury' after he was in collision with a referee's chair, and the player had to be carried off the court. The injury brought a premature end to the doubles final and afterwards Monaco withdrew from the singles event. He is also now be a doubt for next weekend's Davis Cup tie against Great Britain in Beunos Aires, which Andy Murray will also sit out through injury. It was the first time an ATP Tour singles final had been won by a walkover since 2003. "I'm happy to have won this tournament once again but a little sad for Juan, who wasn't able to play the final," Gonzalez said. "He is a great player and even better person. It's tough for him not to be able to play the final and probably miss the Davis Cup next week. "We are good friends and I hope he recovers quickly from this injury."
