Four-time Australian Open winner Roger Federer breezed into the quarter-finals of the tournament on Sunday where he will meet Tomas Berdych.

The Swiss great dominated David Goffin en route to a comfortable 6-2 6-1 6-4 victory that was in stark contrast to reigning champion Novak Djokovic's nervy win against Gilles Simon earlier in the day.

Federer extended a perfect record to 4-0 against Belgium's Goffin, the 15th ranked player, in just 88 minutes on Rod Laver Arena to storm into his 12th Melbourne quarter-final, and he will now play world No 6 Berdych in the last eight.

"I'm pleased with how I played," said Federer. "David normally gives me a hard time in practice so I was surprised at how well I went."

Federer got off to a flyer and broke the Belgian in the fourth game to seize early control and claimed the opening set in 21 minutes with another break of the 25-year-old's service.

Goffin offered no threat and Federer again got an early break to lead the second set, with the Belgian incapable to stemming the flow of winners.

Federer again broke on his fourth break point to crack the second set wide open, and he served out for a two-love lead in 50 minutes.

The 34-year-old continued to turn the screws, with two more service breaks in the final sets as he romped to a quickfire victory.

Goffin, who had posters of Federer on his bedroom wall when he was younger, could not cope against his Swiss idol.

Berdych outlasted Roberto Bautista Agut 4-6 6-4 6-3 1-6 6-3 in three hours and 18 minutes to reach the last eight at Melbourne Park for a sixth straight year.

The Czech has been a semi-finalist for the last two years in Melbourne and the Australian Open has proved his most successful Grand Slam based on match wins, now standing at 38-12.

It was Berdych's fourth win in six meetings with Bautista Agut, who upset former US Open champion and 12th seed Marin Cilic to reach the round of 16.

He hit a total of 66 winners, 28 of them off his signature forehand along with 18 aces, and dominated the battle at the net.

"I always try to prepare the best I can and try to play well and the results are the proof and I am going to try to do the same for the rest of the tournament," Berdych said.

"I think this is my best base start to the year. It's a good one so far, I've got past the first week and now all the focus is on the second week."
