Madison Keys will miss next month's Australian Open after undergoing wrist surgery.

The world No 8 has decided to opt for caution, even though it is now almost two months since the operation which she described as being 'minor.'

The 21-year-old American has opted not to compete in Melbourne, where the first Grand Slam of 2017 begins on January 16.

Regarding her injury, she said: "Three days after the year-end WTA Championships, I had minor arthroscopic surgery on my left wrist.

"The procedure was very short, did not involve any tendon issues and went very well.

"I just don't want to rush back and need to take my time to be fully ready to perform my best on the court."

During 2016, the resident of Florida reached the last 16 of all four Grand Slam events, while losing the bronze medal match at the Rio Olympics.
