Defending champion Garbine Muguruza booked her place in the third round of the French Open but Petra Kvitova's comeback was ended.
Muguruza, the fourth seed, won 6-7 6-4 6-2 after being dealt an early setback by Anett Kontaveit.
Kvitova's comeback ended in the second round as she was knocked out in straight sets by American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
The two-time Wimbledon champion was appearing in her first tournament since a knife attack at her home in the Czech Republic in December but lost 7-6 (5) 7-6 (5).
Kvitova had led 3-1 in the opening set with points for 4-1 and a double break but Mattek-Sands dug in well, saving 10 of 14 break points during the match.
The American, ranked 117, then recovered from 4-2 down to win the tie-break before taking a 10-minute break for treatment to her thigh.
Kvitova sat with her head in her towel, and the disruption seemed to affect her as she dropped serve in the opening game of the second set.
She pulled back level but was edged out in another tie-break, bouncing her racket in annoyance after serving a double fault on match point.
Mattek-Sands, the world No 117, will face 2010 finalist Sam Stosur for a place in the last 16 after the Australian beat Kirsten Flipkens 6-2 7-6 (6).
Tunisian Ons Jabeur became the first Arab woman to reach the third round of a Grand Slam with a 6-4 6-3 upset of sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova.
Jabeur, the 2011 junior champion at Roland Garros, lost in qualifying but was given a lucky loser spot and has made the most of her chance brilliantly.
Venus Williams booked her place in the third round of the French Open after beating Kurumi Nara in straight sets on Wednesday.
From 3-1 down in the first set, the 2002 finalist raised her level to win 6-3 6-1 on Philippe Chatrier.
Williams is playing at Roland Garros for the 20th time, a record in the Open era, and was watched in the stands by her sister Serena, who is missing the tournament as she is pregnant.
Ekaterina Makarova could not follow up on her opening-round win over top-seeded Angelique Kerber as she was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Lesia Tsurenko. Makarova made 27 unforced errors and dropped her serve five times.
