Johanna Konta's hopes of another deep run at Wimbledon came to an end at the hands of Dominika Cibulkova in the second round.

The British No 1 reached the semi-finals at the All England Club last year, but hard-hitting Slovakian Cibulkova produced a ruthless display to end Konta's hopes 6-3 6-4 on Thursday.

"It feels great, it was a tough draw today and I could not be more happy with my performance," Cibulkova said. "I don't really think about the seeding now, I'll just focus on my tennis."

Cibulkova came out on Centre Court looking like she had a point to prove after being knocked out of the seedings when Wimbledon officials elected to promote Serena Williams into the top-32 pack.

And the 29-year-old, a two-time quarter-finalist at the championships, was ruthless in all aspects of her game as she silenced the home crowd and Konta to serve the match out on her fifth match point to set up a third-round meeting with 15th-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium.

Katie Boulter was unable to cause an upset on Court Two as her campaign ended with a respectable 6-3 6-4 defeat by 18th seed Naomi Osaka.

The pair's meeting in Birmingham two weeks ago lasted just 46 minutes, with the champion in Indian Wells in March, Osaka, sweeping Boulter aside for the loss of only three games.

But the 21-year-old, who secured her first Grand Slam victory on Tuesday, showed significant improvement from that match to give one of tennis' brightest rising stars a decent test, but ultimately it was Osaka who moved through to round three for the eighth time in her 10 major appearances.
