US Open: Johanna Konta defeated Belinda Bencic to wipe out memories of collapse
Saturday 3 September 2016 12:42, UK
Johanna Konta impressively continued her progress at the US Open with a third-round win against Belinda Bencic.
The British No 1's 6-2 6-1 victory on Friday was particularly welcome after her previous win, against Tsvetana Pironkova, was marred by a worrying medical time-out after Konta collapsed.
But there were no ill effects against 24th seed Bencic as Konta roared through the first set in just 29 minutes, including two breaks.
Bencic gained a brief foothold with a second set break but 13th seed Konta immediately repaid the favour, before breaking in the final game to seal a simple win.
Konta will play world No 48 Anastasija Sevastova in the last-16 at Flushing Meadows.
Earlier, last year's runner-up Roberta Vinci defeated Carina Witthöft 6-0 5-7 6-3 while former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki, now rated at No 74, beat Monica Niculescu 6-3 6-1.
Madison Keys beat Naomi Osaka 7-5 4-6 7-6 and Petra Kvitova defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-4.
