Tennis career on hold once again for American

Former champion Lindsay Davenport will not be competing at next year's Australian Open after becoming pregnant for a second time. The American, who clinched the title in Melbourne in 2000, has not played since the US Open in September but entered the Australian Open only last week. However, the 'surprise' news means the 32-year-old will not be present at the first grand slam event of the year in January and once again casts doubt over her future in the sport. The former world number one returned to the sport last year after giving birth to her first child, subsequently winning four titles, and is currently listed at 35th in the world rankings. "Of course this unexpected but exciting surprise now means I will be putting tennis on hold for the foreseeable future," Davenport said in a statement. Davenport has enjoyed a highly successful career, winning Wimbledon and the US Open in addition to her Melbourne triumph, while also claiming 55 career titles plus Olympic gold in 1996.
