Sixth seed stunned by Devvarman

Indian Somdev Devvarman sent two-time winner Carlos Moya out of the Chennai Open in a major second round shock. Devvarman, ranked outside the top 200, pulled off a 4-6 7-5 6-4 victory to advance to the quarter-finals of his home tournament. Moya, who won this tournament in 2004 and 2005, dropped two crucial service games in the second and third sets.

Pressure

The 23-year-old, a two-time US collegiate champion, became the first Indian player to reach the last eight of this event since Leander Paes over 10 years ago. "I sent a message to him that I just wasn't going to go away. When you see a player on the other side trying to do too much, you know he's under pressure," Devvarman said. "Hopefully, I'm not just reaching the quarters. I'm not one of those guys who gets content easily."
Heat
Moya thought that the fact the match was scheduled in the afternoon heat to clear the backlog of rain-affected matches was a deciding factor in his defeat. "The heat affected me more than it bothered him," he said. "He plays much better than his rankings reflect. I was not surprised, because I saw him play two days ago and knew he was very fast and was solid from the back of court." Devvarman will now face big-serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Ivo Minar 6-1 6-4 in the second round. Serbian seventh seed Janko Tipsarevic and eighth-seeded Marcel Granollers also progressed to the quarter-finals.
