Belarusian defeats doubles partner to win Memphis title

Victoria Azarenka claimed her second title of the season with a comfortable victory over fellow teenager Caroline Wozniacki at the WTA Memphis Open. Second-seeded Belarusian Azarenka breezed past top-seeded Wozniacki 6-1 6-3 to add the Memphis crown to her first Tour title won in Brisbane in January. 19-year-old Azarenka had lost her first four finals up until her victory in Brisbane, and she quickly made that two in a row with her win in Memphis. Danish 18-year-old Wozniacki had won her first three final appearances before losing in Luxembourg last October, and now in Memphis. In the final, Azarenka was much too strong for her doubles partner Wozniacki, and it took just 70 minutes for the Belarusian to claim the facile straight sets win.

Pressure

"I started well, putting a lot of pressure on her," Azarenka said. "I did everything I should have done. I was commanding the points. "I think I got more confidence as the match went on, too. I was down 2-0 in the third set in my semi-final, and winning that tough match really helped me against Caroline in the final today." Wozniacki had sailed through most of the tournament, but was off the pace in the final and paid tribute to the winner. "She was just playing great; I didn't feel I was playing badly," Wozniacki said. "I felt like everything I hit just came back faster. "
Great match
Wozniacki had won the only previous meeting between the two, but Azarenka levelled the head-to-head record in emphatic fashion. "I had beaten her before and I was hoping it would turn out that way again, but she just played a great match," added Azarenka. "There wasn't too much I could do. Hopefully we can come out and win the doubles now." Wozniacki indeed got her wish, and shortly after the trophies had been handed out, the finalists returned to the court and duly won the doubles finals. The pair, seeded second, defeated Michaella Krajicek and Yuliana Fedak 6-1 7-6 as they each claimed a second doubles title.
