Rogers Cup delight for 27-year-old

Elena Dementieva ended her poor run of form against Maria Sharapova to claim the WTA Rogers Cup. Dementieva had previously won only two of her previous meetings with her fellow Russian - with her last victory coming three years ago in Los Angeles. However the 27-year-old was left delighted at recording a 6-4 6-3 victory at Toronto for a third title of the year. "I really like to play this tournament, but I've never done anything better than first or second round, which was very disappointing for me," said Dementieva, who also won titles in Sydney and Auckland this season. "Every time I come I have such great crowd support. "I just feel so happy to finally win this title. It means a lot to me." Despite the defeat, former world No.1 Sharapova was pleased with her form ahead of the US Open. Sharapova, who is still battling back after 10 months out with a shoulder injury, said: "I think it was a really great week for me. "Playing six matches was great leading up to the US Open. I think this was really good preparation."
