Defending champion loses in straight sets
Elena Dementieva's bid to retain her Rogers Cup title ended in despair as she crashed out to Zheng Jie in the third round.
Dementieva was finally edged out in two hours and 10 minutes, with Zheng recording a 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 victory.
Zheng's reward is a quarter-final tie against 11th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who is aiming to follow up her success from San Diego.
Kuznetsova secured her place in the next round with a minor upset when she beat seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 1-6 6-3.
Second seed Caroline Wozniacki came from a set down to see off Flavia Pennetta 4-6 6-3 6-1 to claim a last-eight tie against French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, who defeated former world number one Dinara Safina 6-4 6-3.
Fifth seed Kim Clijsters comfortably came through her third-round tie as she toppled Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-2 6-1.
Clijsters will now face Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva, a 6-3 6-3 victor over Agnes Szavay.
Marion Bartoli dropped just one game on her way to a 6-0 6-1 victory over Iveta Benesova and will now face Victoria Azarenka - a 6-3 6-3 winner over Li Na - in the next round.
