Seeds Varvara Lepchenko, Alison Riske and Ajla Tomljanovic all won through to the quarter-finals of the Tianjin Open on Wednesday.
But fourth seeded Lepchenko was made to work for her win by Fangzhou Liu, before the American eventually prevailed 7-6 (7/3) 7-5 against the wild card.
She will next face sixth-seeded American Riske, who claimed a 6-4 7-6 (7/3) victory over Bulgaria's Olga Govortsova.
Eighth-seeded Croatian Tomljanovic eased past home favourite Ying-Ying Duan 6-4 6-4, while Romania's unseeded Sorana Cirstea thrashed Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic 6-3 6-0.
