Top seed Eugenie Bouchard pulled out of the Generali Ladies tournament in Linz with a leg injury without playing her second-round match.
The Canadian world number six and Wimbledon runner-up, who had her thigh strapped during a first-round win over Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, decided not to take the court against Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria after the condition worsened.
Her withdrawal was the second major blow to the tournament in Austria in the space of two days after second seed Ana Ivanovic also withdrew.
Pironkova was handed a walkover victory and a place in the quarter-finals, where she will face another player not fully extended on Thursday in Karin Knapp of Italy.
Knapp played just one set against Magdalena Rybarikova, which she won 6-3, before her Slovakian opponent was forced to retire.
Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, the seventh seed, is now the only seeded player left in the tournament. She beat Germany's Mona Barthel 6-4 6-2.
German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam reached her first WTA quarter-final with a 6-0 6-4 defeat of Slovakia's Jana Cepelova.
