Andy Murray has hinted he may not take part at this week's Rome Masters after producing a stunning display to beat Rafael Nadal in Madrid on Sunday.

Murray needed only 88 minutes to beat the home favourite 6-3 6-2 on clay for the first time as he became champion in the Spanish capital less than a week after winning the Munich Open.

The 27-year-old Scot now looks in good shape to make a serious attempt to challenge at the French Open, which starts later this month.

World No 3 Murray will fly to Rome on Monday and is due to play his second round match against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

However, the Briton says he won't make a decision on whether he will play until he arrives in the Italian capital.

"I'm definitely going to fly to Rome tomorrow and then decide whether or not I play the vent probably when I get there," he told Sky Sports 3.

"I mean, I kind of said yesterday (Saturday) that the last couple of weeks have been at altitude and it is different when you play at sea level.

"Obviously the conditions are a little slower and it would be good to get some matches but also there's a very busy few months coming up.

"I played a lot of tennis this year and I need to make the right decision because the French Open, then Wimbledon, they come around very quickly.

"Although there's three weeks between the French and Wimbledon this year you want to use that time as best you can to get used to the grass and gain an advantage over the opposition by spending as much time on the surface as possible.

"I'll speak to Amelie (Mauresmo) and Jonas (Bjorkman) and decide when I get there."
