Heather Watson was dumped out of the Italian Open after a heavy 6-1 6-1 second-round defeat to 10th-seed Carla Suarez Navarro in Rome.

The writing was on the wall for the British women's No 1 after being broken in the opening game of the match and she never recovered as the Spaniard controlled proceedings, breaking twice more on her way to a quickfire first set.

Watson squandered two break points in the third game of the second set as she tried to muster a response but the ground strokes of Suarez Navarro proved too much and the world No 10 held her serve to take a 3-1 lead.

Suarez Navarro then flexed her muscles by rattling off the final three games to complete an emphatic victory and set up a third-round meeting with Eugenie Bouchard.

No issues

Elswhere, Simona Halep made up for last week's surprise opening exit in Madrid, defeating American Alison Riske 6-3 6-0 for a place in the third round of the Italian Open.

Following her victory, second seed Halep said that her physical niggles of last week are no longer an issue.

"I feel good and I have no pain anymore, just a little bit of contraction in the back muscle. I can run, I can play, I can do everything," said the 2014 French Open finalist.

Two seeds lost as Russian Daria Gavrilova put out seventh seed Ana Ivanovic 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (9-7) barely a month after upsetting Maria Sharapova in an opening round in Miami.

Serb Bojana Jovanovski defeated 15th seed Madison Keys 6-4 1-6 6-3.

Victoria Azarenka stayed strong to win a gruelling battle with Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday afternoon.

Azarenka stormed ahead a set and a break 6-2, 21 but it wan't over as Wozniacki fought back, even going up 5-3 at one point.

But Belarus hitter Azarenka came back, forcing a tie-break where she dominated Wozniacki to take the victory.
