Gilles Simon will tackle Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals of the Aegon Open in Nottingham after easing past Joao Sousa on Wednesday.

The French world No 13, who is ​seeded second, needed only an hour and 12 minutes to beat his Portuguese opponent 6-4 6-1, while 12th seed Querrey downed Pablo Cuevas 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3).

Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, the fourth seed, survived a spirited examination from Czech left-hander Jiri Vesely to progress 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5) and will now tackle Denis Istomin for a semi-final place.
