Top seed Ivo Karlovic fought back after losing a gruelling first set to overcome wild-card Daniel Elahi Galan at the Claro Open in Bogota.

The big-hitting Croatian powered down 13 aces in a tense first set, but it did him little good as the Colombian also served well in front of his home crowd to take it into a tie-break.

Galan edged the lengthy tie-break, but Karlovic's class then shone as the world No 23 prevailed 6-7 (12-14) 6-1 6-3 in just under two hours.

He will now face Radek Stepanek in the quarter-finals after the Czech wild-card demolished sixth seed Sam Groth 6-4 6-0.
