Britain's Aljaz Bedene progressed to the second round of the US Open after his opponent Ernests Gulbis retired injured.
The British No 2 was leading the match 3-6 6-4 3-0 when the Latvian decided he could not play on because of a wrist problem.
Gulbis, a former French Open semi-finalist, had looked in charge after taking the first set, but Bedene responded and levelled before taking a three game lead in the third.
The 26-year-old Brit will now play Donald Young in the second round, with the American having shocked 11th seed Gilles Simon in his first round match on Monday.
But there was bad news for James Ward, with the British No 4 losing his ninth consecutive game at the US Open - the latest to Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-1 7-5 6-3.
Bellucci remains on course to meet Andy Murray in third round, while Ward will turn his concentration to preparing for Britain's Davis Cup semi-final against Australia later this month.
