Josh Wright and Gillingham have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, according to Sky sources.

The midfielder enjoyed a sensational 2016/17 campaign, netting 14 times in all competitions after being deployed in an attacking midfield role for the first time in his career.

Sky Sports News understands a fallout between Wright and manager Adrian Pennock has led the 27-year-old to ask for his contract to be terminated at the Sky Bet League One club.

It is understood the fallout occurred a number of weeks ago and their relationship deteriorated due to broken promises over a potential exit from the club.

Pennock left Wright out of his matchday squad for Saturday's 3-3 draw against Southend, with Wright later denying claims he had refused to take his place on the bench.

"It's not for me to go into it right now but just remember always two sides to stories etc but yes I was fit and available today that's it," Wright said on Twitter.

"As said I can't say much but all I will say is I DID NOT REFUSE TO BE ON THE BENCH."
