Captain Stephen Moore has paid tribute to Australia's defensive display in Saturday's 15-6 win over Wales at Twickenham.

The Wallabies were thankful to five Bernard Foley penalties for their victory but it was a remarkable display without ball in hand that held the key.

Australia had scrum-half Will Genia and lock forward Dean Mumm sent to the sin-bin in quick succession as the second half drew to a close, but the 13 men dug deep to hold off a series of Wales attacks and stop them closing the deficit, which was six points at the time.

"It is one of the best wins I've been involved with in this team. I am so proud of all the boys," said Moore, whose side will play Scotland in the quarter-finals.

"We had to defend there with 13 players for long periods, and I am really proud about how we stuck in for each other.

"The guys just kept getting up off the ground and making tackles. It's nothing too complicated, we just kept working hard for each other."

Lock Kane Douglas was at the heart of the defensive stand, which saw Wales go over the try-line on three occasions but fail to ground the ball under pressure.

He added: "It was tough. We had to dig deep - we had to do a few big scrums.

"It was pretty satisfying, eventually getting the ball out of our own end and getting the turnover. We were in a pretty tough position.

"I can't put the nail on exactly what it was. I think 'Cheikie' [Australia head coach Michael Cheika] brings a pretty good culture, everyone has bought into it and it's a really good feeling.

"It was just one job at a time, focus on the scrum."
