Scotland have confirmed Gregor Townsend's first game in charge will be against Italy in Singapore on June 10.

The Scottish Rugby Union announced on Friday that the team's summer tour will kick off in Asia before games against Australia in Sydney on June 17 and Fiji in Suva on June 24.

Singapore will be hosting a tier one international for the first time as the country looks to build on the success of hosting a round of the HSBC Sevens World Series and games involving Super Rugby's Sunwolves.

Glasgow coach Townsend takes control of Scotland in May, looking to build on the improvements made under Vern Cotter over the last three years.

Cotter is the first Scotland coach since Ian McGeechan's first spell in charge - from 1988 to 1993 - to win more games than he lost and although Scotland finished fourth in the Six Nations, they were only denied second place on points difference after winning three of their five games.

Townsend said: "We're pleased to confirm our 2017 summer tour will take us to Singapore, Sydney and Suva, where our players will relish the challenges presented by tough opposition, travel and climate in a concentrated and intense period of rugby.

"Touring builds strong bonds in a group and, in addition our preparation camp, this time together will be invaluable for our new coaching team as we strive to further improve the squad."

Scotland have not played in Australia since 2012 when Greig Laidlaw's penalty saw them to a 9-6 win, coming some 30 years after their last victory over the Wallabies on Australian soil.

That 2012 tour also saw the Scots travel to Fiji, where Tim Visser scored a try on his debut in a 35-27 win.
