George North has declared himself fit for Wales' Rugby World Cup campaign, despite missing the last two months due to heavy concussion.

The winger was stood down by neurologists after receiving an accidental knockout blow to the head from Wasps' Nathan Hughes in Northampton's 52-30 victory at Franklin's Gardens on March 27.

North, who was named in Warren Gatland's World Cup squad on Monday, has confirmed he is ready to play a full part in the build-up to the tournament which begins in September.

"I've progressed nicely through it all and I feel healthy and back to it now," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"At the moment there are no issues. For me it's just a case of optimising my recovery time and Northampton have been brilliant with me.

"They've taken me through everything and I'm feeling back to normal. It's been a bit frustrating because we're creatures of habit and I've missed some big games along the way."

And he added: "I don't think I'll need to wear any head protection. If I think about it then I'll start to worry about it but there's been an adequate amount of recovery.

"I've done all the right things in terms of rest and recovery."

North missed Northampton's Premiership semi-final defeat to Saracens, despite being in contention for a return to action.

Saints rugby director Jim Mallinder has accused Wales boss Gatland of playing "mind games" after the New Zealander warned one more concussion could threaten North's career.

But the 23-year-old appears fit to return to action and insisted he is happy with the medical treatment he received.

"Northampton and Wales were both brilliant with me, making sure I got the right care and making sure I was getting the right treatment," added North.

"There just wasn't enough time to play the (Premiership) semis really."

Wales’ opening fixture in the World Cup is against Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on September 20.
