Northampton centre Tom Stephenson will be out of action for several months after breaking his leg in a friendly against Rotherham Titans.
The 22-year-old broke his leg in two places during the pre-season match, which was part of a double-header at the club's Franklin's Gardens ground.
Stephenson, who missed a large part of last season with a foot problem, underwent an operation on the injury the morning after the game.
Writing on Twitter, he said: "A lot of people asking what I've done. I have snapped my tibia and fibia (hence the loud crack) but I've had an operation this morning and feeling a lot better, thanks for the support, it's been amazing, and I'll be back soon!"
Northampton play one more friendly - in Ulster on Saturday - before kicking off their Aviva Premiership campaign against Bath on September 3.
The Saints finished fifth in the division last year, their lowest league placing for seven seasons.
