Mike Ford has replaced Diego Dominguez as first-team coach at Top 14 side Toulon.
The former Bath boss joined Toulon as backs coach last month and said he was happy working "under the radar" as No 2 to Dominguez.
But with Toulon fourth in the Top 14 table Friday's European Champions Cup win at Sale was not enough to save Dominguez's job, and Ford takes over with immediate effect.
Dominguez had only been in the role since the summer, when he was promoted to replace Bernard Laporte, the successful coach who led the club to three European titles in five years.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal, who denied Dominguez was "under pressure", said the decision was "not an easy one to take".
Ford's first game in charge will be at home to Top 14 opponents Grenoble on Saturday.
