Masoe, who was capped 20 times by New Zealand, picked up the award following a sensational season for Castres - with the 33-year-old helping the club to the play-off semi-finals.
Masoe, who subsequently moved to Toulon in the summer, was honoured at Monday's "Night of Rugby" awards.
France international Brice Dulin was named the revelation of the year, while Toulouse's Guy Noves, Yannick Bru and Jean-Baptiste Elissalde picked up the coaching honour.
