Veteran quarterback brought in to boost ranks of injury-hit team

The Houston Texans have responded to their injury crisis at quarterback by signing 36-year-old free agent Jake Delhomme. Delhomme's agent Rick Smith says the veteran, who guided the Carolina Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII, has been recruited as a back-up to rookie TJ Yates. The Texans are in prime position to secure their first-ever play-off berth after an 8-3 start but have seen both starting quarterback Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart have their seasons ended by injuries. Schaub broke his right foot earlier in November while Leinart suffered a broken left collarbone that required surgery during his first game as the Texans' starting quarterback. Yates will start against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday with Delhomme and Kellen Clemens the team's other passing options. After spending seven season with the Panthers, Delhomme played in five games for the Cleveland Browns last season but was cut from the roster in July.
