Rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is likely to start for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday after Matt Cassel was placed on injured reserve.

Cassel suffered broken bones in his left foot during their defeat by the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

They had hoped to have the 10-year veteran act as a mentor for Louisville product Bridgewater, who they selected in the opening round of the rookie draft earlier this year.

Minnesota still have last season's starter Christian Ponder on their roster but it appears Bridgewater will be under center for his first NFL start against the Atlanta Falcons in week four of the regular season.

They started the season in fine style with a 34-6 win over the St Louis Rams, but have since lost 30-7 to the New England Patriots and 20-9 against the Saints, where Bridgewater completed an efficient 12-of-20 passes for 150 yards.

The Vikings also put right guard Brandon Fusco on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, just weeks after signing him to a five-year contract extension.

They are also without running back Adrian Peterson, who is on the exempt list after being indicted in Texas last week on a charge of child abuse.
