Lamine Diack quits IOC role after suspension

Former IAAF president Lamine Diack has resigned his position as an honorary member of the IOC - hours after being suspended from the role.

Diack, who spent 16 years as the boss of world athletics, was last week placed under formal investigation by French prosecutors over allegations he accepted money to help cover up positive drug tests.

A World Anti-Doping Agency commission has since recommended Russia be suspended from international athletics amid accusations of doping, cover-ups and extortion.

Amid the far-reaching fallout from the WADA report, Diack was on Tuesday provisionally suspended from his position as an honorary member of the IOC.

The IAAF then revealed the 82-year-old had stepped down as the president of the International Athletics Foundation.

Diack was replaced as IAAF president earlier this year by Sebastian Coe, who said on Tuesday he "won't fail" in his mission to clean up the sport.

UK Athletics have backed the call for a ban on Russia, whose athletics federation insists it is committed to co-operating with the fight against doping.
