Hearn back with another heavyweight bonanza

The Prizefighter Series returns LIVE on Sky Sports with a new six event deal. The new boxing format dubbed 'the Twenty20 Cricket of boxing' allows British boxers the chance to fight up to three contests in one night and win £25,000. The first event of the new deal titled 'Heavyweights 2' comes from Newcastle on Friday, September 12 and follows the success of the inaugural Prizefighter event in April this year, won by Martin Rogan. The event will consist of seven fights, featuring eight British heavyweights boxers, with one winner - taking home the top prize of £25,000. Each fight will be a maximum of three, three-minute rounds long and will be held at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle. Local lad David Ferguson, a semi-finalist in the first competition, will be among the boxers at the Metro Radio Arena, where he will be joined by Chris Burton, David Ingleby, Ian Millarvie, Darren Morgan, Pele Reid, Sam Sexton and Lee Swaby. And the mastermind behind the format, Matchroom Sports supremo Barry Hearn, believes the second series, which will travel around the country and down through the weight divisions, will build on the success of the first. "We're giving boxers their chance to be noticed and fight fans quick-fire entertainment," he said. "People like to see action, big punches, big knockouts and the Prizefighter series will deliver that in abundance. "This is the most exciting development the fight game has seen in the past decade. It's going to be a cross between orthodox boxing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. "Three-round fights and no room for a backward step. It's going to be a tear-up because fighters know they've got to win to progress to the next round. It certainly won't be for the faint-hearted. "We don't know if the fights will go one round or three but it will be exciting. One thing this won't be is boring. The winners will be the public so we will see some excitement. "I want to bring a new era of fans into boxing and I want the next generation of fight fans to come and see the events. This is the start of a new era where more and more fighters can make decent money."
