British title for well-travelled Londoner

Journeyman Ashley Theophane knocked Lenny Daws down on the way to a unanimous points victory in Wembley. Daws was making the third defence of his British light-welterweight title but left without the strap despite dominating the first half of the fight. But Theophane has been keeping good company around the world in recent years and came on strongly as the fight went on, dropping his opponent twice in the ninth round. Two body shots and right hand seemed to take a lot out of the champion and Theophane coasted through the last three rounds to win 115-111 (twice) and 115-112. Manchester's Craig Watson avenged his defeat to John O'Donnell two years ago with a unanimous points victory. Watson had won six fights since that narrow split decision loss in 2009 and becomes British welterweight champion for the first time. The judges scored the contest 116-113, 116-112 and 117-112 for Watson, who moves to 20-3 while Galway-born O'Donnell slips to 24-2. Much-hyped heavyweight Tyson Fury made it 13 wins in as many professional fights with a fifth-round stoppage victory against the previously unbeaten Brazilian Marcelo Luiz Nascimento. Another Hennessy-promoted fighter Junior Witter had his comeback stopped in its tracks with a dismal points defeat to Victor Lupo in Canada. The Sheffield veteran, never the most watchable fighter, was deducted a point for holding and visited the canvas several times from his frustrated opponent's throws or his own trips. The 36-year-old former world champion had been promising to regain elite status at welterweight following a lengthy absance but his future looks somewhat bleaker now.
