WATCH: England v Pakistan highlights from day one at Headingley
Friday 1 June 2018 18:56, UK
Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Chris Woakes took three wickets apiece as England bowled Pakistan out for 174 just before tea on day one of the second Test.
Joe Root's side then reached the close on 106-2, trailing by just 68 runs, with the captain and night-watchman Dom Bess to resume the innings in the morning.
The visitors had opted to bat first on what appeared to be a batsman-friendly wicket, but England's bowlers found plenty of assistance through the air to ensure they made the ideal start in their attempt to bounce back from defeat at Lord's.
Imam-ul-Haq needed a review to survive a close lbw call in the second over but he lasted just three balls more before edging a full, wide delivery from Broad to Joe Root at third slip.
Broad had his second when he brought the ball back into Azhar Ali, who missed with a booming drive and was hit plum in front.
There was still ample swing for Woakes, one of three changes to the England side, and 19-year-old debutant Sam Curran. Woakes used it to good effect to have Sohail caught by Dawid Malan low down at second slip.
The recalled seamer struck again in the penultimate over of the morning session, inducing the edge from Shafiq with a ball that moved away from the right-hander, and Alastair Cook took the catch at the second attempt.
Anderson got in on the act after the interval, bowling Sarfraz Ahmed before trapping Faheem Ashraf, who had been dropped in the previous over, lbw with Broad removing Pakistan debutant Usman Salahuddin in between.
Shadab Khan led something of a Pakistan fightback, putting on 34 with Mohammad Amir for the eighth wicket and then 43 with Hasan Ali for the ninth. The all-rounder reached his third half-century in as many matches but was dismissed for 56, holing out to deep midwicket to give Curran his first Test wicket.
In reply, Alastair Cook and the recalled Keaton Jennings put on 53 for the first wicket before the Lancashire batsman edged Faheem behind.
Cook and Root added another 51 and looked set to see England through to the close, only for Cook to glove a Hasan delivery down leg in the closing stages of the day. The hosts remain in control though and will hope to build a significant first-innings lead on day two.
