Surrey batsman Ollie Pope will miss most of the 2019 season after dislocating his shoulder against Essex on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old is one of the most promising youngsters on the county circuit and played two Tests for England against India last summer.
And he scored almost 1,000 runs in the County Championship last summer as Surrey topped the Division One table.
But the county reported on Friday: "Ollie will have surgery on his left shoulder next week.
"After suffering an injury while fielding during Tuesday's Royal London One-Day Cup victory over Essex Eagles at the Kia Oval, the 21-year-old was confirmed to have dislocated his shoulder.
"Having since visited a specialist, he has been advised that surgery would be the best course of action.
"It is hoped he will return to first-team cricket towards the back end of the current 2019 domestic season."
