Head coach Peter Moores would be willing to work with anybody who could help him take England forward - including Michael Vaughan who has been backed to revive England’s fortunes by Kevin Pietersen.

Former captain Vaughan has been critical of Moores in the past and has previously stated he is in the wrong job working with England's senior side.

That makes Vaughan's status as favourite for the newly created director of cricket role appear somewhat awkward, but Moores insists he has not taken anything to heart and is ready to forge a working relationship with whoever the England and Wales Cricket Board appoint.

On the subject of him working with Vaughan, Moores said: "Nothing's personal, this is about England getting better. You'll work with anybody who wants to come in and try to make things better.

"Whoever ends up in that post and how that post is set up it's my job to make it work for the players, they are the key people here. We get them on the park and ready to play good cricket for England.

"I don't like it being about coaches, it's about winning. That's not changed for me at all."

Earlier in the day, Pietersen gave a glowing assessment of his friend and former captain’s credentials.

“Vaughan is close enough to the game to make changes which need to happen for the good of English cricket,” Pietersen said at Surrey’s pre-season media day at The Oval.

“The way he captained shows he’ll change the brand of cricket currently being played, which we need.”

Moores did make it clear he expected to be consulted about the identity of his new superior, with the likes of Alec Stewart and Andrew Strauss also potentially interested in the job.

Asked if he expected to be asked for his opinion, he replied: "Yes, I would. Tom Harrison (ECB chief executive) has made that clear, I think, when you speak to him.

"He's in that role trying to find out the best system and obviously I'll always give my view, that's part of my role as head coach."

When drawn on the possibility of a recall for Kevin Pietersen, Moores was non-committal: "I've said all along it's nothing personal with Kevin [Pietersen], but Kevin's not one of the 16 players here (in the Caribbean), so my focus is on them.

"I genuinely feel we can't look any further. We have three tough Test matches coming up, it would be wrong to be distracted."
