Joe Root hit 134 from 166 balls to help England fight back from 43-3 to reach stumps on day one of the Ashes on 343-7.
Root was dropped second ball by Brad Haddin off Mitchell Starc as Australia dominated the opening exchanges, with Adam Lyth, Alastair Cook, and Ian Bell all falling cheaply.
Root and Gary Ballance (61) led the recovery, putting on 153 together for the fourth wicket, and Ben Stokes (52) also notched a half century.
Starc struck with the wickets of both Root and Stokes within fours overs of each other in the evening session but Moeen Ali (26no) and Jos Buttler (27) continued to play shots, putting on 50 together, before Buttler fell a couple of overs before the close.
Australia's bowlers struggled at times on a slow wicket at Cardiff, Mitchell Johnson wicketless from his 20 overs, costing 87 runs.
