Athers reckons Moeen Ali being given out stumped was the correct decision - and that Australia's potent pace attack could prove pivotal as the Ashes goes on

Michael Atherton reckons the decision to give Moeen Ali out stumped was the correct call as Australia bossed England on day four at the Gabba to move within 56 runs of victory in the first Test.

SCORECARD | DAY FOUR REPORT

Ali was given his marching orders for 40 after Australia wicketkeeper Tim Paine whipped off the bails, but there was conjecture as to whether part of his foot had slid behind the bulbous popping crease.

"To my mind, there was no part of his foot behind the line," said Athers in his video review of day four, which you can watch at the top of the page.

"The line was a bit wonky and crooked but you have to have something behind the line as it is, not as it should be, so I thought the right decision was made, disappointing as it was for England fans."

Ali's exit ended a 42-run stand with Jonny Bairstow for the sixth wicket and England slipped to 195 all out thereafter to set Australia 170 to win.

David Warner (60no) - who Athers says looked "untroubled and serene" - and Cameron Bancroft (51no) then eased the hosts to 114-0 by stumps.
