Who is Aneurin Donald? Glamorgan batsman equals fastest first-class double ton

Aneurin

Could Aneurin Donald be an England Test player of the future?

While Alastair Cook's side were losing the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's the 19-year-old was equalling the fastest double hundred in first-class history.

He reached 200 from just 132 balls for Glamorgan against Derbyshire at Colwyn Bay before falling for 234 off 136 deliveries. So what else do we know about the teenager?

Full name: Aneurin Henry Thomas Donald
Nickname: Nye
Born: Swansea, Glamorgan

Where has this innings come from?

Good question. On paper one first-class hundred and six fifties - the first made on debut against Hampshire - hardly prepared the way for Sunday's explosive knock when he reached his 100, 150 and 200 with sixes but anyone who has seen his range of shots knew it was only a matter of time.

Tell me more about this range…

Remember the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year? Well, Nye caused something of a stir in the victory over Zimbabwe when he deployed the now called 'scooping slap' to despatch a slower ball bouncer well outside off down to fine leg.

Catchy description. Any other suggestions?

The man himself told the ECB: "I asked people if they had any better ideas for a name. We've had the Schloop, and maybe the Nye Scoop [he is known as Nye, having been named after the great Labour Party politician Aneurin "Nye" Bevan], and quite a lot of others."

So, England honours already?

Yep - as well as turning out for the Under 19s, he's led England Under 17s too. So he's already got some healthy leadership experience under his belt.

So plenty of pedigree there…

Absolutely. Although he's now embarking on a career as a cricketer he previously played rugby union for the Ospreys' junior teams. With egg-chasing taking a back seat, he smote a double-hundred for Glamorgan's second XI against Gloucestershire and followed it up with 98 against the same side in the County Championship.
