Thirty-nine-year-old England offspinner Gareth Batty took a wicket 11 years and 139 days since his last Test scalp, on day two of the first Test against Bangladesh.

Resuming on 258-7, England found themselves on the back foot from the off on day two as Taijul Islam had Chris Woakes (36) caught at short leg with the first ball of the day.

Test Cricket: The Verdict

Adil Rashid was next to go, also to Taijul, for 26, and Stuart Broad (13) got the faintest of edges behind off Mehedi Hasan (6-80) to see England bowled out for 293.

Moeen Ali (2-66) took two wickets in the final over before lunch to lift England, but Tamim Iqbal struck a classy 78 to lead the recovery.

Adil Rashid (1-51) dismissed Mahmudullah (38), while Batty (1-51) finally claimed another Test victim; the key wicket of Tamim, caught behind.

A 58-run stand between Mushfiqur Rahim (48) and Shakib Al Hasan (31no) further frustrated the tourists, before Ben Stokes (1-17) dismissed the former in the final three overs of the day, leaving Bangladesh 221-5 at stumps, still trailing by 72 runs.
