England face a battle to avoid defeat after closing on 78-4, still 56 runs behind, having bowled India out for 417 on day three of the third Test.
Click on the video above to see the best of the action from the third day in Mohali as Ben Stokes finished with figures of 5-73 before Ravichandran Ashwin left England reeling in their second innings.
Ravindra Jadeja struck 90, his highest Test score, and Jayant Yadav (55) also impressed - the pair putting on 80 for the eighth wicket to frustrate the tourists.
Just one wicket fell in the morning session; Ashwin the man to depart, for 72, skewing Stokes' fifth ball of the day to Jos Buttler at backward point.
At that stage, India were 301-7, with a lead of just 18, but Jadeja's third fifty in Tests and Jayant's first helped India over 400 and a 100-run lead.
Jadeja only had himself to blame for missing out on a hundred as he holed out at long-on when looking to launch Adil Rashid (4-118) for six down the ground, while Stokes wrapped up the innings with the wickets of Jayant and Umesh Yadav (12) in consecutive overs.
With England not wanting to risk Haseeb Hameed and his potentially broken finger, Joe Root joined Alastair Cook in the middle as the tourists began their second innings.
The England captain made just 12 but it was an incident-packed innings as he twice came out on the right side of lbw reviews before Ashwin removed all doubt by bowling him through the gate.
Ashwin had a second not long after, getting the ball to dip nicely to deceive Moeen Ali as he advanced down the pitch; the England left-hander carelessly chipping the ball up for Jayant to take as he ran back from mid-on.
Root (36no) and Jonny Bairstow added 31 to England's total but just as they were beginning to look settled, Jayant had Bairstow (15) caught behind as he played back; Parthiv Patel with a very smart grab.
England's situation then went from bad to worse as Ashwin (3-19) successfully reviewed to remove Stokes, lbw, in the final over of the day.
