There was plenty of early movement for the Indian seamers in the first innings, justifying Virat Kohli's decision to bowl first having won the toss, but Jason Roy and Sam Billings - in for the injured Alex Hales - survived while ensuring that any bad balls were punished.

Billings (35) eventually fell to Ravindra Jadeja (2-62) with 98 on the board and the left-arm spinner also accounted for Roy (65), the England opener having hit his third consecutive fifty in the series.

Jonny Bairstow, playing due to a groin injury sustained by Joe Root, and Eoin Morgan (44) regrouped, though, and added 84 for the third wicket before the latter was caught off the bowling of Hardik Pandya.

Jos Buttler (11) was unable to make his mark and Bairstow (56) followed him back to the pavilion shortly after reaching his half-century, Pandya (3-49) claiming both scalps.

Jasprit Bumrah then bounced out Moeen Ali (2) but England responded well, Stokes (57no from 39 balls) blasting his way to 50 from just 34 balls with Woakes (34 from 19) providing more than adequate support as they took the tourists above 300.

A partnership of 104 between Jadhav and Pandya got India back in the game before Stokes castled the latter. From there wickets fell at regular intervals but the runs kept coming and the home side were left needing 16 from the final over.

Jadhav smashed the first ball for six and hit the next for four, making it six required from four balls. However, two dot balls followed from Woakes and he had Jadhav caught in the deep with the fifth ball of the over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was unable to hit the six needed from the last delivery, leaving England to celebrate a dramatic win.
