Australia secured a 4-0 series victory as England's miserable Ashes campaign came to an end with a comprehensive innings and 123-run defeat on the final day at the SCG.
Australia's Ashes win has been years in the planning for Steve Smith. He took over the captaincy following Michael Clarke's retirement after Australia's Ashes defeat in England in 2015 with everything since geared towards regaining the Ashes, and they've done it.
Bowlers have been left out of series to keep them fit, while the selectors have chopped and changed the batting line-up to get the right balance and it's not been an easy process with a few questionable results along the way.
But it all came to together in this series and the hard work paid off in the end with Smith, who also won the Compton-Miller Medal and player of the series award, finally lifted the urn above his head at the SCG after Australia completed a 4-0 series win.

"Joe's asleep at the minute. He's got a gastro bug or something like that. He's not been too well throughout the night and it's taken its toll on him. I think the heat yesterday didn't help and he's asleep in the dressing room at the moment trying to recover.
"To be honest, we've been outplayed in the key moments of each game. We've been in the games to a certain extent but we've not been able to capitalise on any of the opportunities we had. Credit to Steve [Smith] and his team, they played fantastically well and they were the far better side throughout the series.
"They've got a fantastic bowling attack and all the batsmen have come to the party, scoring runs when the team needed them. If we look at ourselves, that's where we've slipped up. We've not scored the amount of runs you need to win a series like this and as a bowling group, we've just not created the pressure for long enough periods of time.
"We are very lucky to have such great support, not just the Barmy Army but we've got a lot of English travelling support that follow us around the world. We're very grateful for them even though we've been beaten in this series. They are a fantastic group and we are very grateful to have that support."

"It's been a great couple of months. The cricket we've played has been outstanding. We've been able to take 80 wickets in four Test matches and all the bowlers have taken over 20 wickets so we haven't just relied on one person.
"All the guys have been there and done the job with the wickets being shared around. And obviously scoring big runs in the first innings has been key for us. The batters have stood up and got through difficult periods, winning the key moments which has been crucial in this series.
"England had their foot in the door in all of the Test matches. They've played some exceptional cricket but we've just been able to get on top to win those key moments and not let them back in the game which has been crucial. It's been a really exciting series and we've played some really good cricket which has been the most important thing.
"It's been nice to have these five Test matches pass without any injuries. So much work went in before the series to ensure we had these bowlers on the park. We know it's tough sometimes to get 20 wickets in a Test in Australia but these guys did the job outstandingly well. The effort that they've all put in throughout these four or five Test matches has been amazing and I can't thank them enough. I'm really proud of everyone in that group.
"I just love being out in the middle, doing the job and trying to lead from the front for my team. I work very hard in the nets and I like to hit a lot of balls. My mind's probably in as good a space as it's been with my batting at the moment. I'm making good decisions consistently and that's part of batting. I'm really proud of the way I've played throughout this series and being able to lead from the front."
Man of the match Pat Cummins: "I couldn't have asked for much more. In that first game at the Gabba, I was pumped and the SCG seemed like a long way away but to get through the five and win the series here at home, I couldn't have asked for much more.
"It's been a lot of fun. We're all really close and have played a lot of cricket together at New South Wales. What Nathan Lyon has done in this series in holding up an end means the three quicks can run in and attack and not think about much else.
"It's everything I could have asked for. There's so much hype around every game with the build-up and to be here in the thick of it, see all the crowd and see how much it means to everyone, I've loved every minute of it."
