Virat Kohli survived an lbw review in controversial circumstances

In a such a close match, every decision matters and when it involves the No 1 batsman in the world, even more so.

So when Moeen Ali spun one back to hit Virat Kohli on the front pad and umpire Kumar Dharmasena turned down the appeal, England wasted no time in calling for a review.

It looked very close in real time and, in fact, HawkEye would later show that the ball had hit the Indian captain in line with the stumps and was going on to hit.

Cricket Debate

The problem is, the review never got that far. There was no problem with the no-ball but as third umpire Joel Wilson went through the review process, he spotted that the bat was very close to the ball just before ball hit pad.

UltraEdge showed a small spike just as the ball was passing the bat but that also coincided with Kohli hitting his pad with his bat. It was a tight decision and there appeared to be no deviation to suggest a clear inside edge.

However, the third umpire believed the spike on UltraEdge was an inside edge and promptly ended the review, instructing the umpire to stick with the original decision. England had watched the process on the big screen and were incensed but there was nothing more they could do, Kohli survived and batted through to lunch.

"I thought he hit his pad, and I think there's one angle that we see there, where you can actually see daylight as the ball goes past," said Sir Ian Botham.

"I don't think anyone even considered an inside edge, the bat is smashing into the pad and moving the pad. I don't think there's any bat involved there at all."

Meanwhile, Nasser Hussain questioned whether the review process needed to be altered slightly to make it more of a discussion between the on-field umpire and the third umpire.

"There's a little fault in the system for me here, I have to say," Nasser Hussain said. "I would like umpire Dharmasena to be asked the question 'Do you think [Kohli] hit it?'.

"I do think there's a little flaw in the set-up of the conversation between the upstairs umpire and the umpires down on the field, I think there should be more questions asked."

It was a very close call but do you agree with the third umpire? Or do you think Kohli should have been given out?
