Buttler shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 98 with Stuart Broad (38) to take England from 198-7 at the start of play to a score most considered to be slightly above par before he was the last man to go, caught at slip off Ravi Jadeja (4-79).
England made a good start with the ball as Stuart Broad (1-25) removed Shikhar Dhawan (3) and after a decent spell for the India batsmen, Sam Curran (1-46) bowled KL Rahul (37) and James Anderson took two quick wickets to put the hosts firmly on top.
Stokes had Kohli (49) caught at second slip in the closing stages of the day and then ousted Rishabh Pant to hammer home England's advantage.
