Devon Smith has replaced Chris Gayle in the West Indies squad for their upcoming tour of South Africa.

The left-hander last played a Test three-and-a-half years ago but has been in good form domestically, scoring a hundred and two half-centuries in his last three matches for the Windward Islands.

He joins a 15-man squad missing star opener Gayle, whose withdrawal due to an unspecified injury was announced on Friday.

Darren Bravo was last month replaced by Assad Fudadin after opting out of the tour for personal reasons.

West Indies play three Tests, three Twenty20 internationals and five on-day internationals on their first programme since a tour of India collapsed in October amid a dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board.

The Test series begins on December 17 at Centurion, live on Sky Sports.
