Jacques Rudolph will captain Glamorgan in all formats of the game after he was announced as club captain.

South African Rudolph, who joined Glamorgan in September 2013, takes on the captain’s responsibilities after an impressive run of form in the 2014 season.

The left-handed opening batsman was Glamorgan’s best one-day batsman, scoring 575 runs at an average of 82.14 in the 50-over game and averaging 60.33 in the T20 league.

Rudolph takes over the captaincy from Mark Wallace, and just weeks after signing a contract extension which will keep him at Glamorgan until 2017.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my first season in Wales, but next year is a new challenge and following a number of changes I'm really looking forward to some exciting times ahead,” Rudolph said.

Glamorgan had a challenging season in 2014, with the club finishing eighth in Division Two.

"There were some encouraging signs last summer, especially as we came within one run of reaching Twenty20 Finals Day, but I've always set myself very high standards and I want to rectify a few things from 2014, especially in four-day cricket, as I feel we are a better team than what our final league position suggests."

Glamorgan chief executive and director of cricket Hugh Morris said Rudolph was chosen for his leadership abilities both on and off the field.

“He leads from the front and has shown throughout his career, and in his first season at Glamorgan, that he is a true professional and role model for younger players,” Morris said.

The captaincy announcement comes after a raft of player signings at Glamorgan.

South African Colin Ingram has been signed for next season, as well as fellow batsman James Kettleborough, and all-rounder Craig Meschede on loan from Somerset.
