South Africa will once again rest a number of top players for next month’s three-match home Twenty20 series against West Indies but JP Duminy is back in the squad.
Duminy is sitting out the ongoing Test series between the countries due to injury but is expected to be fit for the third of the Twenty20 matches.
Spinner Aaron Phangiso has also been recalled after missing the tour of Australia in November due to injury.
But Quinton de Kock misses out due to injury and so experienced wicket-keeper Morne van Wyk comes into the squad.
Van Wyk has not played for the Proteas since the 2011 World Cup but his return suggests that he is the front-runner to keep wicket at the 2015 edition, should De Kock fail to recover from his ankle injury in time.
And, with the 50-over World Cup imminent, big names Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel will again be rested, having not played in this format since last April’s World Cup.
Faf du Plessis will captain the side and the first match will take place in Cape Town on 9 January.
South Africa squad: Faf du Plessis (captain), Kyle Abbott, Farhaan Behardien, Marchant de Lange, JP Duminy, Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Morne van Wyk, David Wiese.
