Somerset appoint Alfonso Thomas as one-day captain

Somerset have appointed Alfonso Thomas as their one-day captain for the 2015 season.

The South African seamer will take charge of the side in the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup, with Marcus Trescothick now skippering the team only in the LV= County Championship and also continuing as the official club captain.

Thomas, who joined Somerset in 2008, has already captained the county in seven first-class matches, four List A games and 29 T20 matches.

The highlight of his captaincy came in 2011 when he led Somerset to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Somerset director of cricket Matthew Maynard said: “Alfonso has played a huge amount of T20 cricket in the last few seasons both here and abroad. He has tasted success in the IPL, the BPL and the Big Bash.

“His experiences of the intricacies of the T20 game at the highest level make him the ideal captain for the shorter form of the game.

“Marcus will continue to lead the side in the LV= County Championship and will still fulfil the crucial role of club captain.”
