Wayne Madsen worked hard to score a valuable century for Derbyshire on the first day of their LV= County Championship Division Two match against Leicestershire at Grace Road.
Madsen finished unbeaten on 164 as Derbyshire closed on 320-8, a score which looked well beyond them after they lost their first three wickets for just 38 runs.
But Madsen battled his way to three figures, while Shiv Thakor provided able support with an innings of 41.
Elsewhere in the second tier, Benny Howell and Hamish Marshall combined in a stand of 129 to help propel Gloucestershire to a first innings lead after day two against Glamorgan.
Marshall stepped up to the crease with Gloucestershire on 111-3, trailing by 188 runs. But he remained with Howell for 34.5 overs, with Marshall completing a 106-ball 70 before departing and Howell (67) following soon after.
Gloucestershire ended the day on 301-6 to take a lead of two runs with four first innings wickets left.
Nick Browne continued his impressive form for Essex on the first day of their match against Surrey at Colchester.
The 24-year-old left-handed opener collected a third century from his last four Championship games and his fourth of the summer as Essex reached the close on 323-7.
His 114 from 204 balls included 16 fours and was his second against Surrey, having made 142 when the sides met at The Oval in April.
