Leicestershire's teenage all-rounder Zak Chappell wrote his name in the county's record books despite falling four runs short of a century on his first-class debut against Derbyshire.

The 19-year-old from Grantham scored 96 from 122 balls, the highest ever innings by a Leicestershire number 10, before Mark Footitt yorked him to complete career-best figures of seven for 71.

But Chappell's outstanding innings led a recovery that took Leicestershire from 131-7 to 329 all out with the last two wickets adding 175.

Rob Taylor (37) shared a ninth-wicket stand of 81 while Ollie Freckingham, with an unbeaten career-best 34, helped Chappell put on 94 for the 10th.

Derbyshire's decision to put the visitors in looked questionable until Footitt took four for two in 22 balls, including Dan Redfern, who lost his off stump first ball on his return to the club he left two years ago.

Ned Eckersley scored his first Championship 50 since May 12 but then clipped Footitt to square leg and when the fast bowler claimed his 250th wicket in the competition by having Ben Raine caught behind, Leicestershire were in danger of being bowled out for under 150.

But by tea, Chappell and Taylor had secured a batting point and although Taylor drove Wes Durston to short extra cover, it would be another 24 overs before Derbyshire took the last wicket.

When Chappell was missed for a second time on 90 at deep mid-wicket, he looked destined to score a century but Footitt struck immediately with the second new ball to deny him.

Chappell opened the bowling with Raine but could not add wickets to his runs as Godleman drove him through the covers for the boundary that took him to 1,000 championship runs in a season for the first time in his career.

Glamorgan batsmen James Kettleborough and Aneurin Donald hit career-best first-class scores on the opening day of their match against Gloucestershire at Bristol.

Opener Kettleborough contributed 81 to a total of 338 for four after his side had won the toss, while 18-year-old Donald made an unbeaten 91 and Chris Cooke 65. James Fuller was pick of the home attack with two for 42 from 16 overs.

The visitors were initially made to work hard for their runs after a wet outfield delayed the start by an hour until 11.30am. By lunch, Jacques Rudolph and Kettleborough had taken the score to 22 without loss from 14 overs.

The afternoon session saw Rudolph pinned lbw for 17, surprised by a Payne inswinger, while Fuller picked up the wicket of Colin Ingram, caught behind driving for 30.

At tea, 22-year-old Kettleborough was unbeaten on 78, having overtaken his previous best score of 73, made for Northamptonshire against Middlesex at Lord's last season.

His half-century had come off 82 balls, with 10 fours, after he had been dropped in the slips off Tom Hampton on 18 following a short rain break.

It was a surprise when Cooke fell to a top-edged pull-shot off Fuller, safely pouched by Payne at fine leg with the total on 266.

Donald kept his composure to still be there at stumps just nine short of a maiden century, having faced 122 balls and overtaken his previous best first-class score of 67, made against Essex at Chelmsford this season. David Lloyd was unbeaten on 29.

The first day of play in the games between Surrey and Northamptonshire at The Oval and Essex and Lancashire at Chelmsford were both abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.
