Scott Borthwick will leave Durham at the end of the season after accepting an offer from Surrey.
The all-rounder, capped by England in all three formats, rejected a new contract with Durham seven years after making his first-team breakthrough.
Local newspaper, the Chronicle, reported that the 26-year-old will join current team-mate Mark Stoneman at The Oval next season and Surrey confirmed that later on Monday - he has signed a three-year deal.
A Durham statement read: "Scott Borthwick has rejected Durham County Cricket Club's three-year contract extension and will leave the club at the end of the 2016 season.
"The club made a strong offer to keep his services but the 26-year-old has decided to accept an offer elsewhere and we respect his decision.
"Scott has been a good servant of the club and we would like to take this opportunity to wish him well for the future."
Borthwick has scored 969 first-class runs at more than 40 this season, while his leg-spin has yielded 18 wickets in the longer format.
His sole Test appearance to date came in the final game of the 2013/14 Ashes tour as England slumped to a 5-0 defeat.
