Worcestershire have been dealt a blow ahead of next season after it was revealed overseas signing John Hastings faces a lengthy recovery from a knee injury.

The Australia all-rounder is set to undergo surgery after suffering "a significant patella tendon injury" while playing for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield last week.

Worcestershire announced in August that they had signed Hastings as an overseas player for the whole of next season, but could now be forced to look elsewhere.

"Scans have revealed that John has a significant patella tendon injury and after being reviewed by a specialist it was decided that he will require surgery," Cricket Australia's sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris said.

"We expect that John will require a long rehabilitation period after surgery and we will have a better understanding of his return to play timeframes in the coming weeks."

Hastings, 31, had been a regular in Australia's limited-overs teams in 2016 until he was left out for the recent one-day international series against New Zealand.
